Headdress and Pipes

Headdresses, are a significant part of Native American and First Nations culture and are worn by leaders and warriors to represent their achievements and community role. The “war bonnet” was originally worn by the Great Plains Indians, including the Sioux and Cheyenne. Other tribes adopted the headdress in the late 1800s. They are a symbol of spiritual and political importance, and are only worn by those who have earned the right to do so. They are passed down through generations and are used in ceremonies.

Headdresses are traditionally made of eagle feathers, which are sacred and are believed to support leadership. The style of headdress and the number of feathers a man earns varies by tribe, but typically involves demonstrating bravery, service, or political achievement.
Today, they are used in ceremonies such as official tribal business. For example, a headdress can be transferred to a leader as a sign of honor, validating their achievements.

A ceremonial pipe is a particular type of smoking pipe, used by a number of cultures of the indigenous peoples of the Americas in their sacred ceremonies. Traditionally they are used to offer prayers in a religious ceremony, to make a ceremonial commitment, or to seal a covenant or treaty.
